What is the Firearms Reference Table?

The Firearms Reference Table, or FRT, is the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program's catalogue of firearms known to be in Canada. Each record carries a Firearm Reference Number, the make and model, the action, the calibres it is chambered for, the country of origin, and the legal classification. It is the reference police, businesses and the Registrar use to identify a firearm consistently, and it is what a classification question ultimately comes down to.

How do I look up an FRT number?

Type the FRN into the search box above and the matching record opens directly. If you do not have the number, search by make and model instead, then narrow the results with the action, type, calibre and classification filters on the left. Every result links to its own page with the full record.

Is this the official RCMP FRT?

This is a searchable copy of the published Firearms Reference Table data, provided as a convenience because the official interface is not open to the public in a browsable form. It is not a legal determination. For anything with consequences — a transfer, an import, or a firearm you believe has been reclassified — confirm with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program directly.

What do non-restricted, restricted and prohibited mean?

They are the three classes of firearm in Canadian law and they decide what licence you need, whether the firearm must be registered, and how it may be transported. Non-restricted covers most ordinary rifles and shotguns and needs only a non-restricted PAL. Restricted covers most handguns and short-barrelled semi-automatic centrefire long guns, and requires a restricted PAL plus registration. Prohibited covers automatics, very short firearms, and the models named in prohibition orders.

Why does the same model appear more than once?

Because classification attaches to the specific firearm rather than the name on the receiver. Barrel length, overall length, action and whether the firearm is a listed variant all move the answer, so a single model line can produce several FRT records in different classes. Match the record to the firearm in front of you, not just to the model name.
