Prohibited firearms include automatics and converted automatics, sawn-off rifles and shotguns below the prescribed lengths, handguns with a barrel of 105 mm or less or chambered in .25 or .32, and the long list of models and variants named in prohibition orders — most recently the May 2020, December 2024 and March 2025 orders. Acquisition by individuals is effectively closed, and existing owners hold their firearms under grandfathering provisions with tight limits on use and transport.
Checking this list matters most when a firearm resembles something that has been named. Prohibition orders capture variants, and a model line can be split across classes. If the entry you are looking at is prohibited, treat any listing that claims otherwise as an error and verify with the Canadian Firearms Program before going near a transfer.

What makes a firearm prohibited in Canada?
Automatic firearms and anything converted from one, rifles and shotguns cut below the prescribed barrel or overall lengths, handguns with a barrel of 105 mm or less or chambered in .25 or .32, and any firearm named as prohibited in the regulations, including its variants. The May 2020, December 2024 and March 2025 orders added a large number of named models and variants.
Can a prohibited firearm be bought or sold in Canada?
Not by ordinary licence holders. Prohibited firearms can generally only be transferred between individuals holding the matching prohibited class grandfathering, and the newer prohibition orders came with a buyback rather than a transfer path. Assume no, and confirm with the Canadian Firearms Program before treating any prohibited firearm as transferable.
What happens if a firearm I own gets reclassified?
A prohibition order names the affected firearms and normally comes with an amnesty period during which owners are protected from criminal liability while they comply, along with instructions for disposal, deactivation or participation in a buyback. Following the Canadian Firearms Program's published direction for that specific order is the only safe route.
