They are the only firearms many provinces allow during a dedicated black powder season, they are cheap to feed compared with centrefire ammunition, and the traditional guns hold their value in a way few modern rifles do. Most listings fall into three groups. In-line rifles from CVA, Traditions and Thompson Center dominate the hunting side and are the easiest to shoot accurately with modern optics and sabots. What to check before you buy
Check the bore before anything else
Black powder and its substitutes are corrosive, and a muzzleloader that was put away dirty will show pitting. Run a patch down the barrel and look for rust at the breech, which is where neglect shows first.
Confirm the ignition system
Flintlock, percussion cap, musket cap and 209 primer guns all need different consumables. A 209 in-line is the simplest to supply in Canada; caps for older percussion guns come and go from shelves.
Match the calibre to your use
.50 calibre is the default for deer and larger game and has the widest projectile selection. .45 is popular for target work, and .54 and up show up in guns built for elk and moose.
Ask what comes with it
A muzzleloader without a ramrod, breech plug tool, or the right size ball starter costs more to get shooting than the price difference suggests. Powder measures, moulds and bullet starters are worth real money.

Do you need a PAL to buy a muzzleloader in Canada?
For a modern muzzleloader, yes. In-line rifles and current-production percussion and flintlock guns are non-restricted firearms, so buying, owning and transporting one requires a valid non-restricted PAL. The exception is a genuine antique: a muzzleloading long gun manufactured before 1898 that has not been redesigned to fire cartridge ammunition is an antique firearm under the Criminal Code and is exempt from licensing and registration. Reproductions of pre-1898 designs are not antiques, regardless of the pattern they copy.
How much does a muzzleloader cost in Canada?
Used in-line rifles from CVA, Traditions and Thompson Center typically sell between $200 and $600 depending on condition and whether optics are included. Traditional percussion and flintlock rifles cover a wider band, from a few hundred dollars for a well-used reproduction to well over a thousand for a custom or original gun. What is the difference between an in-line and a traditional muzzleloader?
An in-line places the primer directly behind the powder charge, usually a 209 shotgun primer, which gives more reliable ignition and lets the gun take a scope on a conventional base. A traditional flintlock or percussion rifle ignites the charge from the side through a touch hole or nipple. In-lines are easier to shoot well; traditional guns are what most provinces have in mind when they set a primitive-weapon season, so check your provincial regulations before buying for a specific hunt.
Can muzzleloaders be shipped within Canada?
Non-restricted muzzleloaders can be shipped by carriers that accept firearms, and the buyer must hold a valid PAL. Antique muzzleloaders are not subject to the same transfer requirements, but individual couriers still set their own rules. Powder and primers are dangerous goods and cannot be shipped with the gun.
