Do you need a PAL to get into a Canadian gun show?
Most shows require a valid PAL to enter the sales floor, and many will not let you handle a firearm without showing it. Some shows admit the public to a separate viewing area without a licence, and a few admit minors accompanied by a licence holder. Bring the physical card: a photo of it on your phone is not accepted at the door by most organizers.
Can you buy a gun at a gun show in Canada?
Yes, and the rules are exactly the same as any other sale. For a non-restricted firearm the seller must verify that you hold a valid non-restricted PAL, which in practice means calling the Registrar or using the online verification service before the firearm changes hands. Restricted firearms require a restricted PAL and the transfer must be registered to the new owner before it is lawful, so the paperwork rarely completes on the floor. Handguns are additionally subject to the October 2022 transfer freeze, which halted most transfers between individuals. Expect restricted transfers at a show to be arranged with a business and finished later rather than handed over on the day.
How much does it cost to get into a gun show?
Admission is usually a small cash fee, commonly in the five to fifteen dollar range, and many shows are cash-only at the door. Tables are booked with the organizer in advance and priced per table for the weekend. Bring cash for purchases as well: a good number of private vendors do not take cards, and ATMs at venues charge accordingly.
What sells well at Canadian gun shows?
Surplus rifles, collectible and historical firearms, militaria, reloading components, obsolete calibres and parts. Anything hard to ship or hard to value from a photograph does better in person, which is why the SKS, Lee-Enfield and black powder crowds are so well represented. Modern hunting rifles and optics sell, but the used classifieds usually price them more sharply.

How do I transport firearms to and from a show?
Non-restricted firearms must be unloaded, and it is good practice to use a trigger lock and a case even where one is not strictly required. Restricted firearms must be unloaded, fitted with a secure locking device, carried in a locked opaque container, and moved under a valid authorization to transport. Never leave a firearm visible in a parked vehicle at the venue.
