24,756 records in the RCMP Firearms Reference Table are classified non-restricted. Every entry links to its full record, including the FRN, action, calibres and country of origin.
Non-restricted is the broadest class in Canadian firearms law and covers most ordinary rifles and shotguns: bolt actions, lever actions, pump and semi-automatic hunting guns, and the surplus rifles that make up so much of the used market. A valid non-restricted PAL is all that is required to buy, own and transport one, and there is no registration requirement for individuals.
Classification is a property of the specific firearm, not of the type it resembles. The RCMP records it per entry in the Firearms Reference Table, keyed to a Firearm Reference Number, and the same model name can appear more than once with different classifications where variants differ. What makes a firearm non-restricted in Canada?
A firearm is non-restricted by default if it is not listed as restricted or prohibited and does not meet the criteria for either. In practice that means a long gun with a barrel of 470 mm or more that is not a handgun, not an automatic, not a converted automatic, and not named in a prohibition order or a variant of one. Overall length, barrel length, and whether the firearm is a listed variant are the usual deciding factors.
Do you have to register a non-restricted firearm?
No. Individual owners do not register non-restricted firearms in Canada; the long-gun registry for individuals was ended in 2012. You must hold a valid PAL to acquire or possess one, and the seller must verify your licence before a transfer, but there is no registration certificate for the firearm itself.
Can non-restricted firearms be shipped across Canada?
Yes. Once the seller has verified the buyer's non-restricted PAL, a non-restricted firearm can be shipped by any carrier that accepts firearms, and no authorization to transport is required. That is why province is a convenience rather than a constraint when buying a non-restricted rifle or shotgun.
