Restricted firearms include most handguns that are not prohibited, semi-automatic centrefire long guns with a barrel under 470 mm, firearms designed to fire when reduced below 660 mm by folding or telescoping, and specific models and their variants named in the regulations. Owning one requires a restricted PAL, and the firearm must be registered to its owner.
Restricted status also changes how the firearm moves. Transport generally requires an authorization to transport, the firearm must be unloaded and secured with a locking device inside a locked opaque container, and the permitted destinations are limited. What makes a firearm restricted in Canada?
Four routes: it is a handgun that is not prohibited; it is a semi-automatic centrefire long gun with a barrel shorter than 470 mm; it can be fired when its overall length is reduced below 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise; or it is specifically prescribed as restricted in the regulations, including listed variants. Handguns with a barrel of 105 mm or less, or chambered in .25 or .32, are prohibited rather than restricted.
Do you need to register a restricted firearm?
Yes. Restricted firearms are registered to their owner, and the registration must be transferred before you take possession. The transfer is approved by the Registrar rather than completed between the parties, which is why a restricted sale does not finish on the spot the way a non-restricted one can.
Can I still buy a restricted handgun in Canada?
Most handgun transfers between individuals have been frozen since October 2022, with narrow exceptions for certain businesses, estates and specified categories of owner. Restricted long guns are not affected by the handgun freeze. Confirm the position for your specific transfer with the Canadian Firearms Program before money changes hands.
